Welcome to 5th Grade Reading and Writing

Hello Everyone!

"Nurture your sense of what's possible.  We cannot create what we cannot imagine."

I am thrilled to begin working with our amazing 5th grade class of 2011-2012.  This will be my ninth year here at Bromley and I truly believe we are going to have our best year ever as a school.  We are off to a fabulous beginning.  On the first day, I observed all students acting so kind and understanding in the process of helping others with lockers and schedule assignments.  We enjoyed our time together by getting to know one another and learning  about the structure and procedues that are important to our class.

This year, all 5th grade students will understand that their lives are worth writing about. All writers begin their journey by first writing about what they know best.  To launch the writer's workshop, students will first learn about what their role is and what my role is in the process of creating extraordinary pieces of writing.  For the second year, I will use Lucy Calkins' writing series as a framework for our writing explorations this year.  This research based program has been extremely successful for Bromley students.  In addition, students will understand the 6 Traits of Writing and become proficient in all four Colorado State Content Standards through the Calkins Framework.

Reader's Workshop

This year, our school is implementing the CAFE' model to provide the best possible reading instruction possible for all students here at Bromley.  CAFE' is a framework created by Gail Boushey & Joan Moser after years and years of teaching and ongoing research about the practices for literacy instruction.  CAFE stands for the four essensial skills that strong reader possess: Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, & Expand Vocabulary.  I am excited about using this system due its small group and indivualized instructional model which will enable me to get to know a student's needs a great detail.  More to come on this during back to school night!
