CAFE Reading Grading

Here is how all reading students will be assessed :
Goal Setting 10% - Students are required to set a daily reading goal and be responsible for knowing it. On the log in sheet we are using, there is also a section for them to “reflect” on specifically HOW they used the strategy. This takes modeling and examples of good reflections and weak reflections. This is not easy as it involves higher order thinking skills, but the setting of the goal AND being able to articulate HOW it was used is essential.
Shared Reading 35% - Students are taught strategies in CAFÉ and are then assessed on how skillfully they can utilize the strategies. Ie. Finding the Main Idea, Inference, etc.
Response to Literature 30% -
-Students are to do a book review for each book they finish, as well as for any read aloud finished by the teacher. Rubrics are explained and used in the grading process.
• Bloom's Taxonomy Questions will be utlized and processed by all students when reading selected novels.

Word Work 25% - Students will write new vocabulary they encounter while reading a book. Using a “Word Catcher” they will write the word and the sentence where they encountered the word. Then they are to use a dictionary, write the definition and a “showing” sentence demonstrating they understand the usage of the word.

Upon finishing a book, a student will need to hand in 1. Book review 2. Word Catcher 3. Bloom’s Taxonomy questions applicable to the book, chosen by the student and OK’d by the teacher.
